1981 — graduated from Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics, then — postgraduate courses in the Institute of Linguistics of the RAS.

Doctor of Sciences degree (1992, theme of degree work ‘Semantic Reconstruction in Altaic Etymology’).

2008 — corresponding member of the RAS.

From 1981 till present — Institute of Linguistics of the RAS

Nowadays — Head of Department of Ural-Altaic languages of the Institute of Linguistics of the RAS and professor of the Center of Comparative Studies (Institute of Oriental Cultures, Russian State Humanitarian University).

Comparative historical linguistics — a basic theoretical course read at Department of Structural and Applied Linguistics of the Faculty (later Institute) of Linguistics (Russian State Humanitarian University) from 1994.

Also was a guest lecturer in Novosibirsk, Baku, Washington State Universities.

 

Research Interests: Comparative historical linguistics, etymology, comparative historical phonetics, semantic typology, ethnolinguistics, Altaic studies, Uralic studies, Slavic studies, Indo-European studies, Nostratic studies.
