The journal was founded in 2008 by FSBIS "Kalmyk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (earlier —Kalmyk Humanities Research Institute of the RAS) as a continuation of the periodical "Vestnik Instituta" (Bulletin of the Institute) which had been published since 1963. In 2018, the journal "Vestnik Kalmytskogo Instituta Gumanitarnykh Issledovany RAN" (Bulletin of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities of the RAS) was renamed "Oriental Studies".
Journal title versions: "Bulletin of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities of the RAS" ("Vestnik KIGI RAN"), "Oriental Studies (Elista)".
