The article is devoted to one of turning-points in the history of the Volga Kalmyks in the beginning of 60th of the XVIIth century. Following a short-term struggle for rule in Torgut ruling house Manzhi-Yalbo has suffered a defeat, and the Kalmyk society has got a strong governor in Monchak, supported by the majority of the people and the Russian government.

In the article the author considers the history of penetration and development of Buddhism in Mongolia and draws parallels of differences in the Tibetan and the Mongolian Buddhism. The author gives widespread defi nition of the term khutagt. Khutagt is a religious title granted to reincarnate lamas in recognition of their spiritual qualities. Khubilgaan is the Mongolian translation of the Tibetan term sprul sku and signifi es the reincarnate manifestation per se.
